All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them. —Magic Johnson
On 26th August we officially began the reading programme, with the above quote in mind. We wanted to create a space where our kids can come each weekend to find a little help, hope and someone who believes in them. We have had such a positive response that we have doubled our attendance rates for both the running and reading in the juniors. A testimony to – build it, and they will come.
Read Alex is a special program where we aim to provide support to our kids through improving their literacy, increasing their love for reading and exploring new ways of learning and seeing the world around them. The kids are separated into age-appropriate groups (foundation, intermediate and senior), so we can focus specifically on the needs in each group.
Eventually, we will begin to introduce new subjects, like drama – which will assist with building our kids’ verbal communication skills, confidence and a platform for them to tell their own stories. We will also be doing more interactive classes, spelling bee’s and helping kids with skills like “how to study and prepare for exams”.
Please consider how you can possibly assist us, as we grow. We are looking for anyone who can help facilitate a session (in any of the 3 age groups). You do not need to be an educator (although this skill is very useful). If you have a passion for mentoring, enjoy working with kids or have ideas to share with us, we would be thrilled to have you join us.
Any kind of contribution in this regard is most welcomed.
